The Akwe:go Program provides urban aboriginal children with the support tools and healthy activities which will build upon and foster their inherent ability to make healthy choices. It has been designed based on a fundamental principle: to improve the quality of life of urban Aboriginal children through the delivery of culturally appropriate programs and services.
OVERVIEW OF THE ACTIVITES
Programs provided may include an after school program that allows children to have a safe and structured environment where they can relax, play and/or complete homework. Access to computers and Internet will be available with supervision. The facilitation of support circles and peer support opportunities will help the establishment of relationships among peers and parents. Increasing access to recreational and sporting activities so kids can achieve a level of enjoyment and reap the benefits of physical activity. Incorporated teaching from Elders will also be implemented.
